One of the goals of CLEVER Cities is to promote innovation in the uptake of nature-based solutions (NbS) in the market. Standardisation has been employed in the project as a means to facilitate this process, with the development of the NbS standardisation roadmap. The roadmap serves as a strategy to promoting the uptake of NbS, including specific recommendations based on NbS standardisation needs.
The roadmap methodology can be summarised in five steps:
- Literature analysis on NbS needs and demands around: communication and awareness raising; planning; policy and governance; financing and economic activities; and technical design and implementation
- Survey on priorities for standardisation through the Network Nature Project
- Gap analysis to check if the available standards meet the identified needs
- Engagement with standardisation bodies and produce recommendations This roadmap serves as a foundation that will continue to be utilized even beyond the scope of CLEVER Cities.
D5.7 Standardisation Roadmap – CLEVER Cities
Standardisation Semester – Network Nature
Standardisation is a consensus building process involving many stakeholders. Standards “provide for common and repeated use, rules, guidelines or characteristics for activities or their results, aimed at the achievement of the optimum degree of order in a given context”. [ISO/IEC Guide 2:2004]
How can standardisation be helpful for the upscaling and uptake of nature-based solutions?
Standardisation can facilitate knowledge-sharing among different stakeholders. This can help to build a common understanding of the benefits, challenges, and opportunities associated with these solutions.
Standardisation ensures consistency in the design, implementation, and monitoring of nature-based solutions. This consistency can help to build trust among stakeholders and increase confidence in the effectiveness of these solutions.
Standardization facilitates the replication of nature-based solutions across different regions, contexts, and scales. This can help to accelerate the uptake of these solutions and promote their widespread adoption.
